Install WebLogic14c on ubuntu using vagrant

 WebLogic 14c Installation

Description: I used this demo to install WebLogic 14c and create WebLogic Sample domain which comes default with WebLogic Installations. You may use the sample domain to play around with it.

List of the installation binaries required for Lab setup

1) Oracle VirtualBox

https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.16/VirtualBox-6.1.16-140961-Win.exe

2) Vagrant

https://releases.hashicorp.com/vagrant/2.2.14/vagrant_2.2.14_x86_64.msi

3) Putty

https://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/w64/putty-64bit-0.74-installer.msi

4) Winscp

https://winscp.net/download/WinSCP-5.17.9-Setup.exe

5) X11

http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=156984&filename=Xming-6-9-0-31-setup.exe

6) JDK 11

7) Weblogic 14c

Step 1) Install Oracle Virtual Box

https://middlewareadmin-pavan.blogspot.com/2021/01/oracle-virtual-box-installation-guide.html

Step 2) Install Vagrant

https://middlewareadmin-pavan.blogspot.com/2021/01/vagrant-installation-guide.html

Step 3) Install Putty

https://middlewareadmin-pavan.blogspot.com/2021/01/putty-installation-guide.html

Step 4) Install WinScp

https://middlewareadmin-pavan.blogspot.com/2021/01/winscp-installation-guide.html

Step 5) Install Xming

https://middlewareadmin-pavan.blogspot.com/2021/01/xming-installation-guide.html

Step 6) Spin up Ubuntu Virtual Machine using vagrant

a) Login to windows command prompt and execute vagrant -v command to check if the vagrant is installed. Create a new folder called new-vm using mkdir new-vm.

b) Execute vagrant init ubuntu/trusty64 command to initialize the new virtual machine.

c) Vagrantfile will be created at the same location where you have executed vagrant init ubuntu/trusty64

d)Edit the Vagrantfile and add the following lines to configure the memory settings.

config.vm.provider "virtualbox" do |v|

  v.memory = 2048

end

Note: Modified file is available at - https://github.com/pavanbandaru/wls14c/blob/main/Vagrantfile

Run vagrant up command to bring up the ubuntu VM and you can see the virtual machine on Virtual box after successful execution of the command

e) Allocate the swap space. Currently it is set to zero. Weblogic installation will failed if there is no swap space allocated.
Run vagrant ssh command to connect to ubuntu vm
Run free -mh command to check memory and swap

f) Increase the swap space by executing the following commands.

#Creating a Swap File
sudo fallocate -l 1G /swapfile
ls -lh /swapfile
#Make the file only accessible to root
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
ls -lh /swapfile
#mark the file as swap space
sudo mkswap /swapfile
#enable the swap file, allowing our system
sudo swapon /swapfile
#check the output for the swap space
free -h
#Making the Swap File Permanent
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak
sudo echo '/swapfile none swap sw 0 0' | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab

g) Connect to ubuntu using putty and integrate xming for GUI installations.

Open puttygen file and load the key from C:\Users\pavankumar bandaru\new-vm\.vagrant\machines\default\virtualbox in my case.

After the key is loaded the generate a key using the existing key.
Save the key at the same location C:\Users\pavankumar bandaru\new-vm\.vagrant\machines\default\virtualbox with name putty_private_key

Get the ssh connection details vagrant using the following command

vagrant ssh-config

Connect to putty using the above details.

C:\Users\pavankumar bandaru\new-vm\.vagrant\machines\default\virtualbox\putty_private_key

Password for the user vagrant is : vagrant

Install x11-apps on ubuntu server and run xclock command to verify if it is connecting to xming server.

sudo apt-get install x11-apps

Now we are ready for JDK and weblogic installation.

Download JDK and Weblogic from the following links and copy to ubuntu server using winscp . Copy to ubuntu linux server if you have already downloaded.

 https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase-jdk11-downloads.html#license-lightbox

https://www.oracle.com/middleware/technologies/fusionmiddleware-downloads.html#license-lightbox

Copy the software from your local windows to ubuntu machine using WinScp Tool.

Extract the files at the location /home/vagrant and setup Java home.

Add the following variables in .profile and run .profile:

 echo "export JAVA_HOME=/home/vagrant/jdk-11.0.9" >>  /home/vagrant/.profile

echo " export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH" >>  /home/vagrant/.profile

Execute .profile:

 cd /home/vagrant;

 . ./profile

Verify the Java Version:

vagrant@vagrant-ubuntu-trusty-64:~$ java -version

java version "11.0.9" 2020-10-20 LTS

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 18.9 (build 11.0.9+7-LTS)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 18.9 (build 11.0.9+7-LTS, mixed mode)

Run the following command to install Weblogic14c
java -jar fmw_14.1.1.0.0_wls_lite_generic.jar

Domain Creation using Quickstart configuration winzard

Check if the WebLogic instances are running.
